1. Karl Oscar BJERKE, son of Martinius Andreason BJERKE and Emma Julia OLSON, was born on 24 Dec 1885 in Norway, died on 2 Jun 1916 in Ypres, Belgium aged 30, and was buried in Unknown.

General Notes: Karl was born in the West Toten area of Norway in 1885. On 20 Feb 1891, his parents boarded the S.S. Norge and sailed to New York, USA, arriving 11 Mar 1891. They settled in the Portland, North Dakota area. Jocobine was also born the same year as Karl, but in the northern region of Norway. It is not known when or why Jacobine came to USA, suffice it to say that she met Karl after settling in North Dakota and they were married in April, 1905. Their time together is short and tragic as Jacobine died shortly after giving birth to their son Henry in April 1906. That same year, Karl decided to try his hand at homesteading in Pelly, Saskatchewan. WWI erupted in 1914, and Karl, like a lot of other young Canadians, enlisted to fight in Europe. According to his war records, Karl was killed in action on 2 June 1916 near Ypres, Belgium; his name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial for those whose remains were never recoverd.
The WW I Years: Karl Oscar Bjerke enlisted in the Canadian Army, 44th Battalion, on the 8th May 1915 at Roblin, Manitoba. He sailed to England on board the SS Missanabie on the 4 September 1915 arriving 13 September. Karl was transfered to the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles on the 29 February 1916 and shipped to France where he was taken on strength in the field on the 2 March 1916. His military records show that he was killed -in-action somewhere between the 2nd to the 5th of June 1916. During this time-frame, his unit, the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles, of the 8th Infantry Brigade, of the 3rd Canadian Division, was engaged in actions around Ypres, Belgium. the following is an extract from a book, 'Valour Remembered' published by the Department of Veterans Affairs; 'The year 1916 was the year of the battle of the Somme. But before the Canadians joined in that ill-fated operation they were engaged in local offensives, in the southern part of the Ypres Salient, intended to keep the Germans occupied. At the battle of St Eloi the 2nd Division received its "baptism of fire" in a battlefield of water-filled craters and shell holes The Canadians, wearng the new steel helmets which had just been introduced, suffered 1,373 casualties in thirteen days of confused attacks and counter-attacks over six water-logged mine craters. For the 3rd Division the initiation to battle was even more devastating This time the Germans mounted an attack to dislodge the Allies from their positions at Mount Sorrel just north of the Ypres-Menin road. In the fiercest bombardment yet experienced by Canadian toops, whole sections of trench were obliterated and the defending garrisons annihilated. Human bodies and even the trees of Sanctuary Wood were hurled into the air by the explosions. As men were literally blown from their positions, the 3rd Division fought desperately until overwhelmed by enemy infantry. By evening the enemy advance was checked, but the important vantage points of Mount Sorrel and Hills 61 and 62 were lost A counter-attack by the Canadians the next morning failed; and on June 6 after exploding four mines on the Canadian front the Germans assaulted again and captured Hooge on the Menin Road. The newly-appointed Commander of the Canadian Corps Lieut.-General Sir Julian Byng determined to win back Mount Sorrel and Hill 62. He gave orders for a carefully planned attack, well supported by artillery, to be carried out by the 1st Canadian Division under the Command of Major General Currie. Preceded by a vicious bombardment the Canadian infantry attacked on June 13 at 1:30 a.m. in the darkness, wind and rain. Careful planning paid off and the heights lost on June 2 were retaken. The cost was high At Mount Sorrel Canadian troops suffered 8,430 casuaties including General Mercer who was killed by shrapnel while visiting the front line.'

Karl married Jakobine Nelsina JACOBSEN in Apr 1905 in Portland, North Dakota. Jakobine was born on 17 Jun 1885 in Norway, died on 30 Apr 1906 in Portland, North Dakota aged 20, and was buried in 1906 in Perry Church Cemetary.
