General Notes: GRINDLE, Alton and Minnie (Klingelhofer) by Gordon H. Grindle (son)
Alton Rutherford Grindle, youngest son of Dighton and Rachael Grindle, was born October 7, 1889. It was the summer of 1912, Alton, a young man of twenty-three came to Canada from Aitken, Minnesota, USA and took a homestead north of Pelly in the Maloneck district. Alton came by boxcar, with horses, machinery and household effects. His wife, Minnie, daughter Inez, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Dighton Grindle, his sister Glenna and husband Fred Klingelhofer and daughters, Mary and Nola, all arrived by passenger train. The rail line had only been in a short while.
How did they all come to be in this part of the country? Possibly it all started back in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Much of the country in the northern part of Minnesota was heavily timbered. There was mostly bush work and logging in winter and farming their small farms in summer. It was then many of the men used to go harvesting in North Dakota then worked their way into Canada. Through all this they heard of the $10.00 homesteads of one hundred and sixty acres. Alton's five older brothers all ventured earlier and took homesteads close to Pelly.
While proving up his homestead, Alton rented a farm near Pelly. The old Ellingson or Hogan place, just west of Perry's flour mill. Fall and winter on the homestead and summer on the farm in Pelly. Schooling for daughter, Inez was mostly in Pelly in summer. I'm not sure of their social life, mostly home get-togethers, church and other activities.
Only doctor in Pelly was Dr. Gibson. Most used home remedies for medicine. There was no doctor unless it was really necessary. My grandmother made a salve from Balm of Giliad or black poplar buds, which worked very well. Alton took out wood in winter, which he sold in town, cut logs for lumber and he built one of the first frame houses in Maloneck. It was still standing in the early 1960's, but in disrepair.
The First World War had begun in 1914 the year I, Gordon, was born. Prices seemed fairly good for farmers and near the end of the war, Alton bought into a section of land south of Pelly, the old McRae place. The flu was raging and many had lost their lives. Prices dropped and many had given up their land. Inez had steady schooling in town and I had just started. Diphtheria had struck Inez and we were quarantined for the remainder of that term. Alton gave up the farm and rented land throughout the Pelly and Norquay districts. Life was hard in those days. Mother (Minnie) carried water from a well and washed clothes on a washboard, and there were seven of us in the family, Inez, Gordon, James, Rutherford, Melvin, Frances and Lawrence.
We moved to the old Bailey Place on the meridian strip, just one mile north of The Pines school. That is where most of our family went to school. Some of our school chums were the Davison boys, Clarence, Mildred and Edith Johnson, the Field boys, McDonalds and many more. The McDonald boys did the janitor work and I got the job when they gave it up. For making fires and sweeping the floor I received $7.00 in winter and $3.50 in summer. Quite nice to have your own spending money and then some. I carried on with the janitor work until one morning, I am not sure if it was late May or early June, on my way to school I was stopped by one of the trustees saying our school had burned. I think the year was 1929. I was almost fifteen, that was the end of school for me. They did hold school in the old George Kiddle house until the new school was built. Working with my dad, we dug the basement for the new school. It was a little more modern as they put in a furnace. My brother, James, was given the job as janitor.
We lived there until 1931 and made a move just east of Swan River, the Renwer Cowan district, which was mostly bush work at that time, cordwood, railroad ties, mining timber, logging etc. At this time the family was growing up and some went out on their own. In 1941 I heard about jobs in Flin Flon and I was hired in the Mine Department as a Hoistman. I worked there for almost thirty-six years, until I retired in 1977. Melvin worked on diamond drills. Soon the rest of the famiy made the move to Flin Flon and all got jobs. Lawrence, the youngest son, joined the Army in 1944 at age eighteen, but arrived overseas just as the war ended. He stayed on until he was discharged in 1946.
Minnie Grindle passed away in March 1945. Alton stayed in Flin Flon for a while and then went to the coast where his son, Rutherford was working. Alton passed away in July 1964. His daughter, Frances Graham, who also lived in New Westminster passed away shortly after. Rutherford passed away in 1971.
At the time of writing, some of the family have moved to other places. Inez was in Flin Flon until 1980. She now lives in Portage la Prairie. James lives in Brandon and Melvin in Rocky Mountain House. I, Gordon, and Lawrence are both retired and stayed on in Flin Flon. Most of the family have all married, raised a family and now have grandchildren of their own. Lawrence kept busy with a hobby, finished carpentry for himself and family. Also golfing and bowling, along with his wife, Geraldine.
I, Gordon, keep busy with my hobby of working in my small greenhouse and it is a challenge to grow the tender roses in the north with success. I am a member of our local Horticultural Society for many years and also past President and I do Home Ground judging.
This is the family history to date of the Alton Grindle family, given to the best of my knowledge. Dates may not be accurate. I have travelled somewhat, England, Europe and many other places throughout the world. I went on a bus tour through the state of Maine and the Grindle name is quite popular, as that is where my grandfather was born.
As I, Gordon, have made my home in Flin Flon for the past forty-five years, it is always nice to go back where I was born - Pelly, with memories of my youth. It will be great to help celebrate Pelly's 75th year and to look back. Pelly was only three years old when I was born.
