Descendants of Karl Oscar Bjerke and Jokobine Nelsina Jacobson

This site is dedicated to the descendants of Karl Oscar and Jakobine Nelsina (Jacobsen) Bjerke. Karl was born in the West Toten area of Norway in 1885. Sometime between 1889-1893, his parents emigrated to USA and settled in the Portland, North Dakota area. Jocobine was also born the same year as Karl, but in the northern region of Norway. It is not known when or why Jakobine came to USA, suffice it to say that she met Karl after settling in North Dakota and they were married in April, 1905. Their time together is short and tragic as Jacobine died shortly after giving birth to their son Henry in April 1906. That same year, Karl decided to try his hand at homesteading in Pelly, Saskatchewan. WWI erupted in 1914, and Karl, like a lot of other young Canadians, enlisted to fight in Europe. According to his war records, Karl was killed in action on 2 June 1916 near Ypres, Belgium; his name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial for those whose remains were never recovered.
